Measure each individual window because size differences are common.
Record width first, then height (or length) to the nearest 1/8 inch.
Measure window's width from left to right and height from top to bottom.
Use a steel tape measure. Don't use a cloth tape as cloth tapes may stretch
and give you an inaccurate measurement .
Depending on your window fashion style, use the following
measuring instructions:
Horizontal Blinds and Fabric Shades (Includes Innovative
Shadings, Solar Shades)
Inside Mount:
For an Inside Mount, blinds and shades are installed inside the window
casing. Minimum depth requirements vary (some price lists and reference
materials may also refer to an inside mount as IB).
Measure the inside width of window casing precisely from one inside edge
to the other in 3 different places. Keep the narrowest measurement.
Measure the height precisely in three different places from the top edge
of the opening to the top of the sill. Keep the longest measurement.
Do not make any deductions for clearance. The factory will the take
necessary deductions for a perfect fit.
Measure the window diagonally in two places, as per the picture to the
right. If the two diagonal dimensions are not the same, an outside mount
application is recommended for optimal shade function and aesthetics.
Solar Shades: On Continuous Loop inside mounts, there is a 7/8 inch
light gap per side. On cordless inside mounts, there is approximately 1/16
inch total light gap (31/32 inch on control end, 19/32 inch on idle end).
For optimal light and glare control, outside mount is recommended.
Outside Mount:
For an Outside Mount, blinds and shades are installed outside the window
casing, covering an area larger than the window itself (some price lists and
reference materials may also refer to an outside mount as OB).
Measure the width to be covered precisely. Make sure the measurement
overlaps the window opening by at least 1 1/2 inches on each side (3 inches
total overlap) to ensure light control and privacy.
Measure the height to be covered precisely, including any desired overlap
(typically from top edge of the molding to the bottom edge, or to the top of
sill if there is one).
The factory makes NO allowances for an outside mount.
Vertical Blinds
Inside Mount:
For an inside mount, blinds are installed inside a window casing or door,
or wall-to-wall in a room. Each window casing must be at least 2 3/4 inches
deep for a track flush mount or 3 3/4 inches deep for a louvers flush mount.
If not, an angle bracket may be necessary (some price lists and reference
materials may also refer to an inside mount as IB).
Measure the inside width precisely of the window casing from one inside
edge to the other edge in three different places. Keep the narrowest
measurement.
Measure the height precisely in three different places from the top edge
of the opening to the bottom or the top edge of the sill, if there is one.
Keep the shortest measurement.
Do not make any deductions for clearance. The factory will take necessary
deductions for a perfect fit.
Outside Mount:
For an outside mount, blinds are installed outside of the window casing,
covering an area larger than the window itself (some price lists and reference
materials may also refer to an outside mount as OB).
Measure the width of the window precisely, including the frame, if there
is one. Add 3" (6" total overlap) to each side for light control and privacy.
Measure the height of the window from the top edge of the molding to the
bottom edge, or to the top of sill, if there is one. Add 3 inches for an
adequate mounting area above the window.
If the blind extends to floor (for example to cover a patio door), measure
the height in three places precisely and take the smallest measurement.
Deduct at least 1/2 inch for clearance so the louvers don't touch the floor.
The factory makes NO allowances on an outside mount.
NOTE: If you want the entire window uncovered when the blind is
fully open, you may need to add more than 6 inches to the width.
