Modern and Traditional Chandelier Designs

A chandelier (Kronleuchter) is a decorative light fixture with a branching design and two or more bearing lights. Chandeliers have been around for a very long time, and often have an appearance that is ornate and spectacular. Despite the ubiquity of the traditional form and design of the majority of chandeliers around the world, there have been a number of innovative modern variations that push the boundaries in terms of overall design and chandelier structure. Some of these variations stick closely to traditional forms, while others vary widely from the commonly accepted definition of what it means to be a chandelier.

The very earliest chandeliers used candles for illumination, and were installed in medieval times in places of assembly and worship. The design of the earliest chandeliers consisted of a simple wooden cross, complete with spikes upon which the candles could rest. Over the decades and centuries that followed, chandeliers have become more intricate and ornate in their design, to the point where they are often associated with ideas surrounding luxury and the aristocracy. From the 15th century onwards, more complex and intricate chandeliers were designed, mostly based on traditional ring and crown designs. These were widely used by members of the upper class and the church, and installed as a symbol of wealth and luxury. Some decadent designs even featured gold ornamentation and pearls (www.perlenforum.de) , and were installed more for show than illumination. Omolu forms also started popping up in the 18th century, which came complete with long curved arms and multiple candles.

The glassmaking industry had a big effect on the design of chandleiers during the 18th century as well, with many designs using intricate glass finishings and decoration. Some famous traditional chandelier designs include the English Adam design, Baluster, Bobeche, Crowns, Coronas, Crystals, and Festoons. The Festoon design is worth mentioning, and is actually a chandelier accessory that is made up of an arrangement of glass beads and draped around a traditional glass chandelier.

The last two centuries have seen a number of innovations in chandelier design and manufacture, as seen in Murano chandelier (www.italian-lighting-center.com) and other Italian designs in particular. With modern materials and architectural principles being merged with the traditional chandelier form, no-one can tell what the future of chandelier design will be. The chandelier has even crossed over into the world of art on a number of occasions, being featured in installations and shows all over the world. While the introduction of electric lighting fixtures have made the chandelier design not as popular today as it has been in the past, they continue to be designed and produced around the world and used in a wide variety of environments. Much like a piece of fine silver jewellery (Silberschmuck) or some nice designer clothes, a chandelier is a great way to show the world your sense of style and good taste.
