Early American settlers lived in cabins built from logs without the benefit of today's
insulation against cold and heat. To cover the cracks in their wood hewn floors,
they used floor coverings for looks and to help keep winter's chill at bay. The
first rug to appear among the settlers was the braided rug which was made from strips of
any kind of cloth that was available. These braided rugs were made by braiding these
strips of cloth much like a girl's hair is braided. The braids were then sewn
together in a circle for the cabin floor. Since the strips of cloth came from
blankets, coats, canvas, and old torn clothing, the rugs contained several different
colors. These first rugs were simple floor coverings that provided warmth for the
colonists. Since then, area rugs have evolved into different shapes and colors and are
created from many different types of materials. You will find them in a variety of sizes
too. They are used for decoration as well as for comfort and warmth in the winter.
