Cooking has been around for centuries. As soon as man became
accustomed to the taste of cooked meat, cooking because a necessary skill.
Different nationalities have introduced different dishes and methods for cooking
to the United States. Did you know that we didn't even have pizza until Italian
immigrants introduced it in the late 19th century. Gennaro Lombardi opened the
first pizzeria in 1905 in New York City, but it didn't become popular until
after the end of WWII. Soldiers came home from Italy and brought their tastes
for newly discovered dishes with them. The pizza craze had begun.
To make
your cooking experience better, we carry wooden cutting boards, wine racks,
spice racks, knife blocks, appetizer trays, and other kitchen accessories.
If you are concerned about the safety of using wooden items, we found in 1993,
the Food Research Institute conducted tests on wood surfaces. The purpose of
these tests was to compare wooden cutting boards against plastic ones for
relative safety and cleanliness. These tests used seven different species of
hardwood and contaminated them with E-Coli, listeria and salmonella along with
four types of plastic. The surprising results showed that on the wood surfaces,
the bacteria were killed off within 3 minutes of touching the surface. Plastic
cutting boards did not have this same effect. Therefore their recommendations
were: use normal cleaners (soap and water) when cleaning a wooden cutting
surface and any bacteria left behind will be killed by the wood itself. If it
makes you feel safer, you can also use a weak (1-10) dilution of bleach to clean
your wooden utensils and cutting boards. This dilution will not harm the wood so
it is safe to use on all your wooden kitchen accessories.
Certain items
are NSF certified. The NSF is the National Science Foundation and is an
independent agency of the US government since 1950 that inspects and which is
accepted as the ultimate endorsement of sanitary, food safe products.
